| Torgersen Hall houses the Department of Advanced Communications and Information Technology at Virginia Tech, but it also serves as a main entrance to the campus. The building encloses 150,000 square feet of floor space, and its size and design complement the University Gothic architecture in the central campus. The Architect wanted the precast trim to accent the natural “Hokie Stone”. There are 3,536 individual wet-cast architectural precast concrete pieces on this building, 32 of which are uniquely sculptured panels made to look like hand chiseled limestone. FEDERAL WHITE CEMENT was used with natural sand and a small amount of pigment to achieve the tan color the architect was looking for to compliment the natural stone. All pieces were acid-etched to simulate the texture of natural limestone at a fraction of the cost. The precast won Craftsmanship Awards in1999 and 2000, as well as a 2002 Design and Manufacturing Excellence Award from the Architectural Precast Association. The 2002 Jury commented: “It appears from the photographs that the quality of the precast work is excellent, with good color consistency throughout the project.” | ||||||
